Chechelele at Wetherby Arts Festival

05/10/2024 Venue & Time tbc

So looking forward to sharing this evening of music and songs from Tipperary to Timbuktu with the wonderful CHECHELELE. Chechelele are a mixed choir who sing songs from all around the world and in their performances live up to their name which is word form the Shona language meaning “Happy”. Traditional African rhythms and songs form the core part of Chechelele’s repertoire. In addition to this core Chechelele have, over the years, collected, performed and recorded songs from all over the world and just about every continent. The choirs’s current list includes songs from Bulgaria, Georgia, Macedonia, China, France, Finland, Israel, Hawaii, New Zealand, Columbia and the Amazon. Chechelele also has a fair sprinkling of spirituals and gospel music from the Southern States as well as the odd political number and sometimes just songs we like that don’t fall into any particular category.  The perfect setting for the event is Wetherby Arts Festival which for more than 47 years has been bringing the best of the arts in the widest sense to Wetherby.  Over the year there have been some famous names appearing at the festival alongside local talent. They have included Stephane Grappelli, Humphrey Littleton, Honor Blackman, Roger McGough, Julian Lloud Webber and comics fresh from the Edinburgh Fringe such as Tom Wrigglesworth and Dr Phil Hammond.

Liam O Maonlai & Paula Ryan

04/09/2022 @ 4pm – Black Dyke Mills Heritage Venue, Brighouse Road, Queensbury, Bradford, BD13 1QA, UK

What a joy and a privilege to be playing on the same stage as one of my all time musical heroes and an icon of Irish music across all genres – traditional, indie, pop, rock, you name it – the one and only Liam O Maonlai! Since first bursting onto the scene in the 1980’s with his band Hothouse Flowers, Liam has captured the attention of audiences, critics and musicians alike. According to Rolling Stone Magazine Bono noted the ensemble were the “best unsigned band on the planet.” It is no wonder that Liam remains a “musician’s musician” and no surprise he has performed alongside the best of them. As a solo performer as well as frontman of Hothouse Flowers, Liam continues to wow audiences worldwide reinventing himself with each performance. A true gaelic speaker and singer the material will draw on traditional Irish folk, gospel, blues and rock.

SO SO looking forward to this.

Daoiri Farrell & Paula Ryan

12/10/2022 @ 7.30 pm – National Centre For Early Music,  St Margaret’s Churc, Walmgate, York YO1 9TL, UK

What a joy and a privilege to be playing on the same stage as one of most important singers to come out of Ireland in recent years. Six months after releasing the album ‘True Born Irishman’ Daoirí won two prestigious BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards 2017 for Best Newcomer and Best Traditional Track, and performed live at the awards ceremony at London’s Royal Albert Hall.

Since then he has toured the UK, and played at festivals in Australia, Canada, the UK, Belgium, Denmark and more. In February 2018 he toured with the all-star Transatlantic Sessions in major venues across the UK. Daoirí released his new album ‘A Lifetime Of Happiness’, produced by Dónal Lunny, in February 2019. In autumn 2019 he was also nominated for three RTÉ Radio 1 Folk Awards 2019 for best singer, best traditional track and best album for ‘A Lifetime Of Happiness’

His powerfully unadorned vocals might be from any era, variously recalling Paul Brady and Andy Irvine…it’s a powerful statement.’ Mojo

Really looking forward to this.

20/11/2022 @ 8pm - Sunjay & Paula Ryan

SUNJAY & Paula Ryan at TWICKFOLK

20/11/2022 @ 7.30 pm – Patchworks, Cabbage Patch Pub, London Road, Twickenham TW1 3SZ UK

I am delighted to be sharing the stage with Sunjay whose style has that natural drift between folk and blues and both camps have recognised his obvious flair. There have been a clutch of award nominations, including winning the Wath Festival Young Performers Award. He also made the final selection for the BBC’s Young Folk Award in 2012, had three nominations at the Exposure Music Awards 2014 and was also recognised by the 2014 British Blues Awards.

Drawing from a rich, musical and cultural background it is hardly surprising that Sunjay has quickly become acknowledged as one of the folk scene’s rising stars. His performances have been described as “mature & confident”, while his guitar playing has been hailed as “superb, brilliant, experienced, intricate & faultless”.

Following a recent stint playing Buddy Holly in a touring musical theatre production Sunjay’s fourth album was sensibly entitled ‘Sunjay Sings Buddy‘. Then in 2019, supernatural normal service was resumed with ‘Dev il Came Calling’, his first to original material in four years showcasing Sunjay’s trademark blues with a modern day twist.

An evening with Sunjay is an evening of exquisite blues, country and folk music combined with a master class in guitar playing interspersed with hilarious anecdotes.

When Woody Allen and Al Pacino wanted to make movies featuring the timeless quality of Greenwich Village, they came to Vivaldi. Over the last thirty years, Vivaldi has been a haven for New Yorkers and creative people from the world over. However, it has always been a gathering place for musicians. It is, after all, named for the Italian composer, Antonio Vivaldi. November 18, 2016 @ 7:00pm – Caffe Vivaldi, Greenwich Village
32 Jones Street, (off Bleecker Street, near Seventh Avenue), New York, NY 10014, USA

SOOO EXCITED to be playing the renowned Caffe Vivaldi! When Joseph Brodsky won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1987, he gave international press interviews while sitting down at Vivaldi and enjoying his favorite drink. With live music seven days a week, The Listening Room at Caffe Vivaldi has become New York’s premier spot for original music by uniquely creative singer-songwriters. SO PROUD to be invited to play here – Can’t Wait!

Each workshop is specifically designed and tailored to the ages, abilities and aspirations of the participants. The aim of all Paula’s workshops is to ensure a relaxed, happy learning environment for participants to express themselves creatively and have fun exploring music, song and rhythm and to provide participants with the opportunity to CHANT, SING, CLAP, STAMP, PLAY, DANCE to their heart’s content and experience the joy of communal music making as practised in communities across the world for centuries.
